Silent Sound

Silent Sound by Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard
Music by J. Spaceman. Introduced by Dr. Ciarán O'Keeffe.

More info: http://www.silentsound.info

Silent Sound first took place in 2006 in Liverpool. There will be a second performance on Sunday 7th March 2010 in Middlesbrough at the gothic Town Hall.

Conceived by British artists Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, Silent Sound is an otherworldly experiment using controversial mind control technology to transmit a subliminal message during a live music performance. The artists joined forces with J. Spaceman from Spiritualized, commissioning him to create a new composition for the project to carry their subliminal message.

Sunday 7th March
Doors 6.30pm

Middlesbrough Town Hall,
Albert Street, Middlesbrough TS1

Tickets £8, £6 concessions
Available from 01642 729 729
or http://www.avfestival.co.uk/programme/10/events/silent-sound

Places are strictly limited.

Silent Sound sets out to warp your perception and stage a remarkable experience loaded with potential which intensifies your experience of being in the here-and-now. Drawing on the powerful psychological set-up of 19th century Spiritualist public performances and inspired by Victorian entertainers The Davenport Brothers who were famed for attempting to contact the souls of the dead using their ‘spirit cabinet’, the artists perform inside their own specially created soundproof cabinet. From the stage inside their cabinet they repeatedly broadcast a spoken 'message', this signal is fed into a custom-made Silent Sound machine, which subliminally embeds the message within the music and transmits it throughout the performance.

The event will be recorded live and a limited edition CD will be available.

Silent Sound 2010 is part of the AV Festival

Ladies And Gentleman press release

‘LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE’

Release Date: November 16

Label: Sony Music

“This album is so precise and everything on it sounds amazing; it's arranged so nicely. Jason Pierce is a genius”
Ben Goldwasser, MGMT

“I had a job cleaning a private golf course from 4am to 6am. My boss was a fucking idiot.
What got me through that job was listening to [Ladies and Gentlemen]”
Guy Garvey, Elbow

Spiritualized will re-issue their classic album ‘Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’ on Monday 16th November on Sony Music.

The album release co-incides with the upcoming live performances of the entire album; part of All Tomorrow’s Parties  ‘Don’t Look Back’ series, as previously announced. The band were approached two years ago to perform the album live on its 10th anniversary.  It took a while for  J.Spaceman to finally agree to the idea. ‘It was a decision made at altitude’ he says referring to being on top of Mt. Buller in Australia at the time. The live performances will see the regular band augmented with strings, brass and choir.

It is now 12 years since ‘Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’ made a profound impact in the summer of 1997, both critically and commercially, with its psychedelic soundscapes and heart-rending lyrics. It has influenced a whole range of musicians ever since. It was NME’s album of the year for 1997 and reached No.4 in the official charts.  Originally packaged as a giant pill offering a written prescription, the concept was creatively inspired reflecting the depth of emotion and trauma laid bare on this truly remarkable work.

The album will be released with new artwork on special limited edition formats with bonus content. These bonus tracks were in storage and subsequently forgotten about until Jason Pierce moved house and discovered the ‘lost’ recordings from 12 years ago. The tracks give a valuable insight into the artist’s work-in-progress – demos, instrumental versions, sessions mixes – and highlight an aim for perfection prior to recording the definitive version.

The formats include:

The Collector’s Edition. This will include 12 x 3” Mini CD’s of the complete full album track-by-track, an homage to the original release. This will be accompanied by 2 bonus discs (as per tracklisting below). Only 1,000 of these sets will be made, making these extremely limited.

The Special Edition will include the original album in the legendary and unique pill pack style packaging, alongside the 2 bonus discs. This Special Edition will also will be a limited, one-off release.

The original album with new artwork and a revised version of  opening track ‘Ladies & Gentlemen’ (now including “Can’t Help Falling In Love” as originally intended for this album), will also be released as a Standard 1CD Version.

Songs in A&E - press release

After much anticipation, and a longer than expected wait, Spiritualized are set to release their long-awaited 18 track sixth studio album, ‘SONGS IN A&E’, on Spaceman Records on May 26th. The US release will be announced this week.

The album will be preceded by the single, “Soul On Fire”, available on 7in vinyl and digital on May 19th.

Since the release of the last studio album, ‘Amazing Grace’, there followed a lengthy period of touring but this was unfortunately curtailed by a serious illness which struck main man Jason Pierce in 2005. Time spent in intensive care interrupted the writing and recording of the follow up record both prior to, and after his illness. Inevitably perhaps, this setback turned into an inspiration…

Following the completion of the A&E recording sessions there was a period of label uncertainty in 2007 so Spiritualized presented their acclaimed Acoustic Mainlines live show, during which they previewed ‘acoustic’ versions of new & old material, at many and various festivals and revered venues, including the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY.

Acoustic Mainlines will play their last few shows at the i-Tunes festival on March 2nd at Air studios and a handful of US west coast shows including the Coachella Festival in April.

The band will be touring with the full line up and additional gospel singers in May followed by extensive touring around the world including shows at Benicassim in Spain, Summer Sonic in Japan and extensive tours & festivals in the UK, Europe and USA.

J Spaceman has also recorded the soundtrack to the film, ‘Mr. Lonely’, directed by Harmony Korine, which is released in the UK in March with a soundtrack on Drag City.

New Years message from Spaceman

Just a short message to say happy new year to all out there. It's been a good year for the Spaceman but it wouldn't've counted for nothin' without you guys. Thanks for all the support, records, chat and stuff. We've been sittin' on a finished (and mastered) record here for months now while Universal try to sort out their shit so with luck it should be resolved early this year and you can have it.

The shows were a real high, too many good times -Edinburgh, Traena, the Apollo, , too much and more, gonna miss this stuff. We maybe got Vancouver down to Palm Springs in a few months but that's it for acoustic mainlines, after that we're going electric ...

Also this year, Harmony Korine's truly beautiful "Mister Lonely" film is released to cinema with an o.s.t.  to follow on Drag City Records. It was an honour and trip to work on that one and probably one of the things that was most instrumental in me finally finishing the Spiritualized album so we all got Harmony to thank for that one. Go see his film.

"Spaceshipp", a new duet recorded at Abbey Road with Mathew Shipp for the Treader label is also coming out sometime soon.

Anyways, you should check in here for updates and stuff
Best show of last year was probably Roky or Gruff or Lone Pigeon or maybe John Tchikai or something else i forgot.

Favourite records of the year, all on the same label from mississippi (Mississippi Records) are the compilations -
"I don't feel at home in this world anymore" 1927 - 1948,
"Lipa Kodi Ya City Council"
"Life is a problem"

Special Thanks to ;  Mick Paterson, Rob Holden, Harmony and Rachel Korine, Tony Doggen Foster, Richard Knowles, Tim Lewis (thighpaulsandra), Kate, Gibby, Mark Lanegan, Ari the artist , Rupert, The Sian Alice Band, J.C., Sam Kirby, Ben Crook, James Alderman and Boswell, Brian Flores, Tom Edwards, Tim Holmes, Malcolm Carson, Bruno, Jeanette lee, Anthony, Matt Connor, Juliette, Yvonne and Travis
And the Mainline band, UK - (all members at some point) Violins - Nikki Gleed, Ellie Stanford, Caroline Simms, Jenny Christie;  Viola - Rachel Robson, Henrietta Ridgeon;  Cello - Anna Mowat, Laura Anstee, Helen Rathbone, Kath Jenkinson;  Choir - Carla-marie Williams, Carleen Graham, Claudia Smith, Sheena White, Lena, Annette Bowen, Yolanda Sutherland, Lorraine Smith, Joy Malcolm, Adeetoun Anibi, Wendi Rose

Mainline band USA west coast - Vioins - Julie Carpenter, Paloma Udovic; Viola - Heather Lockie;  Cello - April Guthrie;  Choir - Sj Selby, Melonie Nyema, Laura Dickenson.
Mainline band USA East coast -  Violins - Julie Carpenter, Paula Yoo;  Viola - Heather Lockie; Cello - Jessica Catron;  Choir - Chastidy Elliot, Angialou Dixon, Lakeithsha Williams, Ramona Dunlap, Leisa Smith.

Yet More Stock!

Couple more things coming online in the next few days. Very limited numbers again!

We've dug out a box of tees made by design / fashion house Product 250. Baring the slogan "And My Soul Has Been Spiritualized", they come on a custom-made 3/4 sleeve fitted tee. Sizes and colours to follow, but they're isn't many...

Plus, a set of 5 Amazing Grace Pin Badges featuring the heads from the album artwork treated in a Warhol style. They come on a printed cardboard mount.

Available from the Pharmacy very very shortly...

Dec 7th

New Stock For The Pharmacy

New stock will be available from early next week! First off, a brand new t-shirt design, an illustrated version of the classic Spaceman® print. We've used American Apparel tees this time; slightly more expensive (especially in the UK), but far, far superior fit and colours in our opinion, ethically made and cruelty free. Features Spiritulized® armprint. Available in silver ink on white and silver on pale blue. Very limited numbers, so order early to avoid missing out.

We've also been digging in the archives and found some awesome deadstock; both items originally from the Ladies & Gentlemen... tour. Again, numbers are strictly limited. We've got a glow-in-the-dark on navy tee; the artwork is from the limited edition 12 CD boxset. Size large only. Plus we've some found L&G mugs! Large "Spiritualized®" logo with "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space B P" below it. Silver foil on navy mug.

Prices to follow...

Hack Iraq

As you're probably aware we've been attacked by the Turkish Hackers. Even though we totally sympathise with the sentiments of our hijackers, the forum appears to be well and truly scuppered!

We were planning to redesign the Outpatients area in the spring; looks like we'll be doing that sooner then.

Can any of the moderators contact me to discuss the next steps?

Jason's illness

As rumoured on the forums both here and at NME.com, J.Spaceman was recently taken critically ill but has been allowed home after a prolonged stay in intensive care and critical care.

Jason contracted advanced periorbital cellulitis with bilateral pnuemonia with rapid deterioration requiring intensive care and c-pap for type 1 respiratory failure.

A truly massive "Thank You" to all the Medical Staff and Nurses at The Royal London Hospital A&E, Cambridge Ward, Intensive Care and Critical Care / Cotton Ward whom all worked so amazingly hard on his treatment and recovery.

"Thank You" also to Intensive Care Dept at St Barts for his 2 day transfer there.

And thanks to all you for your good wishes and thoughts.
